Home and Hearth
Meet Edgar, one of our furry children that we got from a shelter in Vermont many years ago. Edgar comes and goes when he pleases; he's a stealth little guy, a prankster too. In his days of youth, he reveled in depositing dead mice on the front door step, sometimes arranging them in a neat little line as if to say, "Ma, look at all this loot I brought you! I'm contributing to the family!"
He's lost his collar a number of times over the years, and we replace it when we think to do it. (We live in a very quiet area.) Sometimes I don't see him for a couple of days, and when he returns, he's spent–– curls up on an upholstery chair in the kitchen and is out cold for hours. I have often wondered what exhausts him so much and what he's been up to in my absence.
Well!
Yesterday morning when I opened the back door to let the dogs outside, a rush of black fur whirred past me to jump onto the countertop for the cat bowl. Except this particular bundle of black fur was making a jingling noise. Funny…I don't remember getting him a new (pink) collar with a clanging bell. I looked closer and saw not only did he have a new collar, but a new name ("Blackie"), a new phone number, a new address…a new family!
I have no idea how long Edgar has been cheating on us! I find this funny, but yes, I'm embarrassed I haven't made better efforts to make sure he's always wearing a collar. (Lesson learned.) I've since gotten him a new collar (a respectable black with fleur-de-lis designs) as well as a nametag with his proper name. I'll call the number on the pink collar, but frankly, I'm a little nervous.
In other home news, I've started breaking down my studio, throwing stuff out, and planning the redesign. I drafted a little survey yesterday—a beta version—of one we'll be putting on the Quilting Arts site in a few days. I would love your input.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. May your home be filled with lots of love for this special holiday, and may your entire clan—people and furry—be together.
